During the Vietnam War, A.J. Muste stood outside the White House night after night with a candle, sometimes alone. He was a Dutch-born American clergyman and activist. A reporter once asked him if he thought his protest would change the country's policies, and he replied, "I'm not doing this to change the country. I'm doing it so the country won't change me".
